Tomba dell'Abate Elia.

Description

On May 23, 1105, Abbot Elias closed his eyes in the Lord. The people of Bari mourned for a long time the one who had welcomed the relics of Saint Nicholas, who had built the Basilica and had guided them as archbishop from 1089 to 1105. The beautiful epigraph compares him to Solomon for wisdom and to Elias for prophetic spirit. Undoubtedly he had been the most authoritative man in Bari in the last thirty years of the 11th century. This became even more evident when, in the years following his death, the factions of Bari clashed in a dense series of bloody events.
