Ciborio e Presbiterio

The ciborium: a small marble temple dating back to the 12th century: the oldest in all of Puglia. It is characterized by four columns of red and purple breccia that end with capitals decorated with angels, rams, birds and plant motifs.

The canopy guards the altar and hides behind it, in the central apse, one of the diamond points of Romanesque-Pugliese sculpture, created in the first half of the 12th century: the “Chair of Elijah”. This is the precious chair of the Prior, with a single-cuspid back and whose red seat is supported by small columns and slaves, whose interpretation symbolically refers to the triumph of the Church over the Saracens.
